What is the Difference Between Tai Chi and Qigong?

While both are ancient Chinese practices that use "Slow Movement" and "Deep Breath" to cultivate Qi (energy), they have different origins and focuses:


Qigong (氣功) – "Energy Work"

  • The Focus: Primarily health, healing, and vitality.
  • The Movement: Usually consists of single, repetitive movements. You might do one motion ten times before moving to the next.
  • The Goal: It is designed to "cleanse" the body and move energy through specific meridians. It is often easier for absolute beginners to learn quickly.


Tai Chi (太極拳) – "Supreme Ultimate Fist"

  • The Focus: Flowing meditation and (historically) internal martial arts.


  • The Movement: A choreographed sequence of movements (often called a "Form") that flows together without stopping. It’s like a slow-motion dance.


  • The Goal: It builds incredible balance, leg strength, and mental focus. Because it requires moving the whole body as one unit, it is the "gold standard" for fall prevention.


Why We Combine Them: In our sessions, we often start with easy Qigong to warm up the joints and quiet the mind, then move into Tai Chi to challenge your balance and coordination. Together, they provide a complete system for physical and mental well-being.
